ONZ’s Quality Initiatives: Helping Growers Produce the Highest Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil
There are reduced costs for members participating in these initiatives
The ONZ Certification Programme - In order to meet the internationally agreed criteria governing whether oil can be labelled as New Zealand extra virgin olive oil, an oil has to meet four criteria:
- the international standard for fatty acid levels
- the more stringent ONZ standard for peroxide level
- the absence of sensory defects in taste and smell.
- a minimum level of fruitiness.
ONZ has established an internationally accredited sensory panel to perform the sensory assessment. Members are encouraged to have their oils assessed by the panel once they have received results of the chemical analyses.
The ONZ Quality Mark - Those oils that meet the chemical and sensory requirements are eligible to be sold under the ONZ Quality Mark. The Quality Mark guarantees that the oil is from New Zealand-grown olives and meets the appropriate standards for extra virgin olive oil
The ONZ Olive Oil Annual Awards - Growers are encouraged to enter their oils in the ONZ annual national competition for Best of Show, and Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. The judging panel provides feedback to each entrant about their oil.
The ONZ Marketing Initiative
ONZ seeks to promote members’ extra virgin olive oils in New Zealand markets.
ONZ marketing initiatives include:
- members having a link from the ONZ webpage to their company /grove webpage
- listing on its website retail outlets throughout New Zealand that sell ONZ members’ oil
- listing the results of the ONZ Olive Oil National Awards on its webpage
- encouraging regional branches to develop local initiatives and to build local knowledge of the olive oil industry and its products
Building A Strong Industry Organisation
ONZ’ strength as an industry organisation depends on active participation of all those working in the industry.
It is important that the executive should be able to draw on members representing all facets of the olive industry.
The Annual Conferences provide key opportunities for members to meet, discuss and vote on issues, set strategic directions and elect the executive.
